What Is Macular Degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a condition that affects the central portion of the retina, known as the macula. Over time, it can lead to changes in central vision, making tasks such as reading, driving, and recognising faces more difficult.

There are two main types of AMD:

  • Dry AMD — the more common form, which typically progresses gradually

  • Wet AMD — less common, but associated with more rapid vision changes

A New Approach to Dry AMD

MacuMira® is a Health Canada–approved treatment (2022) for dry age-related macular degeneration. It is currently one of the only available treatment options specifically for this form of the condition.

MacuMira® uses targeted light-based therapy to stimulate cellular activity within the retina. The goal is to support retinal function and help slow progression in appropriate patients.

This treatment is:

  • Non-invasive

  • Clinically guided

  • Based on emerging evidence

  • Delivered as part of an ongoing care plan

Patients Who May Benefit from MacuMira® Treatment

MacuMira® may be considered for patients who:

  • Have been diagnosed with dry age-related macular degeneration

  • Are experiencing changes in central vision

  • Are seeking options beyond monitoring alone

Eligibility depends on the stage and characteristics of the condition. A comprehensive assessment is required to determine whether this treatment is appropriate.

Early Changes Are Not Always Noticeable

Dry AMD often develops gradually and may not be noticeable in its early stages. Regular eye examinations allow for earlier detection and monitoring of changes in the macula.

Early detection can:

  • Provide a clearer understanding of progression

  • Create opportunities to consider emerging treatment options

  • Support better long-term management of visual function

Our Approach to MAcular Degeneration Care

Macular degeneration is managed through careful monitoring, patient education, and evidence-based clinical decision-making.

If MacuMira® is appropriate, it is incorporated into a broader care plan that may include:

  • Ongoing retinal imaging

  • Monitoring of visual changes

  • Lifestyle and nutritional guidance

  • Coordination with other eye care providers when needed

Our focus is to provide clear information, realistic expectations, and consistent follow-up throughout your care.
